About the YesforWinthropsKids! Committee
Our Town is at a Crossroads – We Need Your Help to Build a Stronger Future for Winthrop.
As neighbors, parents, friends, and concerned residents, we are deeply invested in the future of Winthrop. We face tough decisions, but we also have the chance to ensure that our community thrives, our children get the education they deserve, and our city workers are fairly compensated.
The Winthrop Public Schools are the heart of our town. The needs-based budget proposed by Superintendent Howard is our opportunity to create a school system where every child has the resources and support to succeed. However, if we don’t act now, we risk losing that opportunity.
Without an override in April, we won’t just be cutting programs and staff—we will be jeopardizing our children’s futures. Fewer teachers, larger class sizes, less support for special education, and rising costs to send kids out of town will become our new reality. Worse, we won’t have the resources to negotiate fair teacher contracts, which are due next year. Our kids deserve better.
But the impact won’t stop there. Our entire town will suffer. Essential municipal services—from public safety to road maintenance—will be at risk. The rising costs of providing these services have outpaced our current budget, and we’ve already reached the limit of what we can do without this override.
Additionally, voting YES on the school stabilization fund will provide critical financial security for Winthrop Public Schools not just this year, but in future years as well. This fund is dedicated exclusively to the schools and will ensure ongoing support for the school budget, helping to cover unexpected expenses, prevent future shortfalls, and maintain essential programs and staffing levels. By investing in this fund now, we are creating a more stable and sustainable future for Winthrop’s schools, avoiding last-minute budget crises and giving our children the education they deserve.
The tax increase proposed isn’t just a stopgap—it’s a chance to protect our schools, our town services, and the long-term health of our community. This is about more than just numbers; this is about our children, our teachers, and the services that make Winthrop a great place to live.
We cannot afford to wait. We need to act now for the future we all want. Vote YES on the override—because Winthrop deserves better.
